Furnace Services in Grand Rapids and West Michigan
A Michigan winter is not the time to find out your furnace can't keep up. Prime Comfort Heating & Cooling handles furnace repair, installation, and maintenance for homeowners throughout Grand Rapids and the surrounding West Michigan communities, and we'd rather fix it right the first time than come back to fix it twice.
Furnace Repair
A furnace that's short cycling, blowing cold air, or making a weird noise usually isn't going to fix itself. Our team diagnoses the actual issue first, walks you through it in plain language, and only recommends the repair your furnace actually needs. If it's the middle of a cold snap and your heat goes out, give us a call at (616) 345-8136; after-hours service is available. We know that's not a problem that can wait.
If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, get everyone out of the house and call your gas utility or 911 first. Then call us.
Our Furnace Services
Furnace Installation & Replacement
When a furnace is past the point of a reasonable repair, or you're building out a new system from scratch, we'll help you pick a furnace that's properly sized for your home using a load calculation. An oversized or undersized furnace can mean higher energy bills and a shorter equipment lifespan, so we take the time to get the sizing right instead of just swapping in whatever's easiest.
We install Goodman and Navien Hydro-furnaces, plus Coleman furnaces built for mobile homes. A Hydro-furnace is high-efficiency (97%) and modulates to run quiet and even. It's also built with safety in mind: combustion happens in a sealed unit, and the air moving through your home passes over a coil filled with hot water, never near the exhaust.
Furnace Maintenance
A yearly furnace tune-up is one of the simplest ways to avoid a breakdown on the coldest night of the year. Our maintenance visits are hands-on, not just a quick glance. We check burner and flame condition, inspect the heat exchanger, test for carbon monoxide, verify gas pressure, and test the safety controls, so small issues get caught while they're still cheap and easy to fix. Our Prime Protection Plan includes an AC tune-up in the spring and a furnace tune-up in the fall, 15% off repairs with no diagnostic fee when you move forward with the repair, and priority scheduling, starting at $19.99/month.
Why West Michigan Homeowners Choose Prime Comfort
We're an owner-operated HVAC company with over 65 years of combined HVAC experience, and we'd rather explain what's actually wrong with your furnace than upsell you on something you don't need. Because a furnace is a gas appliance inside your home, every visit includes a safety check, not just a performance check. We serve homeowners across our West Michigan service area, including Grand Rapids, Wyoming, and the surrounding communities.

FAQs
How long does a furnace last?
1
Most gas furnaces last 15 to 18 years. Yearly maintenance, regular filter changes, and a properly sized system all help yours reach the longer end of that range.
How often should I change my furnace filter?
2
A standard 1-inch filter should be changed every 1 to 3 months. Thicker 4- or 5-inch media filters usually last 6 months. Change it more often if you have pets or allergies, or during heavy use.
Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
3
First check that your thermostat is set to Heat and the fan is on Auto, not On. A dirty filter can also cause the furnace to overheat and shut off the burners while the blower keeps running. If neither is the problem, it's likely an ignition, flame sensor, or drain issue, and it's time to call us.
Should I repair or replace my furnace?
4
It depends on the furnace's age, the cost of the repair, and its safety. A furnace under 10 years old is usually worth repairing. An older furnace that needs a major repair, or one with a cracked heat exchanger, is often better replaced. We'll give you an honest recommendation either way, not a sales pitch.
What size furnace does my home need?
5
The right size comes from a heat loss calculation for your home, not square footage alone. Insulation, windows, and air leakage all change the answer. An oversized furnace short cycles, wears out faster, and leaves hot and cold spots.
Is a high-efficiency furnace worth it in Michigan?
6
Usually, yes. With long heating seasons, a 95%+ efficient furnace can noticeably cut your gas bills compared to an older 80% unit. Utility rebates may also be available, and we'll help you find them.
What does AFUE mean?
7
AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) is the share of fuel that becomes heat in your home. A 96% AFUE furnace turns 96 cents of every gas dollar into heat, while an older 80% furnace loses 20 cents up the chimney.
Do I really need a furnace tune-up every year?
8
Yes. A fall tune-up catches small problems before they become no-heat calls, keeps your warranty valid, and includes a safety check for gas leaks and carbon monoxide.
